So I woke up to a cold Monday morning, and while i strayed around my small room for what to feed myself and run out of the house, it struck me that I needed a sweater for this chilly Monday. Quick! I ran through my things, and because I already had a premeditated outfit for the day, All I needed was a sweater that wouldn’t do anything but enhance my looks.
And then it struck me, of all the sweaters I own, just one would do the trick.
THE BUTTON DOWN SWEATER
The button down sweater is just like every other sweater, only that it is designed to have at least 5 buttons. Built like a shirt but still has the thickness of a regular cardigan. The button down sweater just adds the exact degree of dapper to every outfit when you go this routes.
WEAR LOOSELY: Exactly my first choice, this is the simplest and easiest way to spot the button down sweater as it allows for more sartorial options. i.e, you get to use a tie, a waist coat, lapel pin (depending on the type of sweater). Also, if you are spotting a statement belt, it becomes even more exposed and fashionable.
PROPERLY BUTTONED: In this case, you are using the button down sweater as you are supposed to, fastening all the buttons gives you a more formal and masculine outlook. However, if you choose to wear a tie, or a waist coat it will all be an additional mark to the overall outlook.
A LITTLE INGENUITY WON’T HURT: I have always mentioned how being stylish bares on ingenuity, on being extremely creative and bold. The same applies with rocking a button down pullover. Just because you are wearing a button down sweater doesn’t totally cut out your habit of rolling sleeves. you can opt to roll your sleeves over on the sleeves of the sweater carefully enough to not bring about discomfort or an unsightly bulge.
when spotting a button down sweater, it is advisable to leave the last button undone. This advise is applicable to when you are wearing a two button or three button suit and the reason behind this is, when you fasten the last button, the suit, jacket or whatever becomes blown up, i.e it makes the outfit look like its twice your size.
Also, be mindful of the colours, you must choose solid colours for a more formal outlook, colours such as grey, black and navy. when spotting a tie, ensure that the tie is of a different hue with the shirt and the button down sweater (you can also choose to match the tie and the sweater but it must contradict the tone of the shirt). In a more casual way, you can wear a nice crew neck T shirt,l a Henley shirt or a polo with a button down sweater (long sleeves or short), it will make for a perfect evening wear.
