SUITS: AS MUCH BASICS AS NEEDED. by DIANA ENE ULOKO

Every fashionable man in today’s world owns a pair of suit but it really isn’t about owning but rather about how you wear it. How you wear a suit piece to work, a formal event or even a wedding actually matters a lot and says a lot about you and your personality. Most people feel that wearing a suit piece makes you look and feel older but the truth is it actually gives you maturity and an aura that actually makes people want to listen to you when you talk. Here are a few tips to pulling off a very fashionable look in a suit:

SUIT JACKETS
The jacket should not hang loosely off you but rather it should be snug on the shoulders; it should fit especially if it’s a made-to-measure. More so, the sleeves should as well be long to terminate just above the wrist; at least ½ of the sleeves should be covered [notice the amount of the white shirt protruding from the mannequin below]. About lapels, which is the flaps that spread out outwardly on the chest, Notch lapels tend to be more formal while peak lapels emanates certain elegance. Double breast suits are in from the past and they are chic!

TROUSERS
The trousers should not be skinny but slender enough to make a perfect fit but not too tight as skinny pants removes the essence of the suit from being a formal wear. The break of the trouser should suit personal taste. The break of a trouser refers to the point where your trousers touches your shoe. If your pants are too long it makes you look sloppy and like you’re wearing oversized pants, trousers cropped too high make you look like a school boy. The type of break you give to your trousers affects your overall appearance. Personally, its best to go for slight breaks that terminates on the ankles, it’s trendy showing off ‘Mankles’ (men’s fashion nomenclature for the ankle of a gent) and socks when I sit and walk as it suits my personal style.

SHIRTS
For suits, dress shirts in neutral colors like white, blue, grey and stripes in these colors tend to go perfectly well with suits, even more with solid colored shirts with white collars. For blazers or sports jackets, matching your shirt with the color of the suit exudes more elegance.

SHOES
This is like the most important part of a suit dress up as nothing spoils this look more than a pair of scruffy shoes. Every man should try as much as possible to invest in good leather shoes as this can serve you for a very long time. Shoes in colors like brown, burgundy, black and tan shades are necessary.  Brogues, loafers, monk straps, oxfords are ideal shoes for the suit dress up, and when adequately polished and worn with cognizance of the color of the suit, pocket square or belt adds more credit to the overall outlook. Hence, the color of belt to be used should always match the color of shoes worn. For those in the creative industry; the fashion writers, artists, bloggers etc… trainers are in 🙂

Final Words
Ties can be worn to stand–alone or layered to complement a certain constituent of the entire ensemble, like wearing a crisp white shirt with a Marsala colored 2-piece suit, a Marsala tie worn in this case complements the entire outfit, if in place of the Marsala tie a different tie is worn, say a patterned tie; it becomes a stand–alone constituent of the entire ensemble. In a situation where a striped dress shirt is being used, please use a plain tie as using a striped tie on a striped dress shirt is a fashion mistake a lot of people tend to make.

Men have the ideology that when it comes to suits black is the go to color. Suits in solid navy, grey are good choices for work suits as black is suitable for evening functions, in order to pull off a similar look charcoal grey is recommended. As time goes on the colors can begin to broaden.
Pull off any look with confidence anytime, anywhere as the suit actually portrays
Panache and acute elegance of its own and don’t forget to BE STYLISH.
